Blocked Drains Manchester: Local Coverage in 2026
Manchester's drainage is not uniform, and the blockages reflect that. Much of the city's inner housing, the Victorian and Edwardian terraces of Levenshulme, Rusholme, Moss Side, Hulme and Chorlton, sits on original clay pipework with shared drain runs between properties, which makes tree roots, displaced joints and shared-responsibility disputes far more common than on newer estates. Manchester's older inner core is served in places by a combined sewer system carrying both foul and surface water, so heavy rainfall raises the risk of sewage backup where a private drain is already partly blocked. In the city centre and Ancoats and the Northern Quarter, the density of restaurants and commercial kitchens makes fat, oil and grease the dominant cause, and fatbergs form in the shared runs beneath them.
We cover the whole city: Manchester city centre, Ancoats, Didsbury, Chorlton, Fallowfield, Hulme, Levenshulme, Rusholme, Withington, Moss Side, Whalley Range and Openshaw, with engineers based nearby.
Why the Same Manchester Drain Keeps Blocking
A recurring blockage in an older Manchester terrace usually is not a blockage. It is a symptom. Rodding clears it; six weeks later it returns.
The cause is almost always structural: root ingress through a cracked clay joint, or a section that has settled and left a lip catching everything that passes. So on a repeat call we do not simply rod it again. We run a CCTV drain surveyalong the full run, find the actual fault, establish whether it sits inside your boundary or in a shared drain, then quote for the right fix: root cutting, pipe relining, or, in a minority of cases, excavation. Clearing the same drain four times a year costs more than fixing it once.
That diagnostic-first approach is what separates a drainage professional from someone with a set of rods.
Signs You Have a Blocked Drain
Slow drainage from a sink, bath or shower is the first sign, as limescale, hair and soap residue narrow the pipe. Gurgling drains mean air is being forced back past a partial obstruction. Drain odours indoors or around an outside drain mean waste is sitting and decomposing. Sewage backup into a sink, bath or toilet, or an overflowing gully or inspection chamber, is an emergency. And a drain that blocks repeatedly has a structural cause, not an incidental one.
What We Clear, and What Causes It
Blocked toilets are the most disruptive, and most are caused by wet wipes, including the ones sold as flushable, with sanitary products and paper towels. We clear them with a drain snake or hand auger where a plunger is not enough.
Blocked sinks come from fat, oil and grease with food waste in the trap. Baths and showers block from hair and soap residue binding into a plug in the U-bend. Outside drains, gullies and inspection chambers collect leaves, silt and grit and leave standing water. A blocked shared drain or lateral drain can affect several properties at once.
Beneath all of it, four causes dominate: fat, oil and grease, which solidifies and forms fatbergs; wet wipes, which never break down; tree roots, whose root ingress finds any crack in older clay pipe; and a collapsed drain, collapsed pipe or displaced joint, which traps waste every single time the drain is cleared.
Rod, Jet or CCTV: When We Use Each
Drain rodding suits a standard blockage close to the fixture with direct access. Fast, and often all that is needed.
High-pressure water jetting is for grease, silt, root matter and long external runs. Jetting scours the full pipe wall clean rather than punching a hole through the blockage, which is why a jetted drain stays clear longer.
A CCTV drain survey is for recurring blockages, pre-purchase checks and diagnosing structural faults. It is recorded, so you see exactly what is wrong before paying for any repair.
We carry all three on every van. Rodding, drain snaking, jetting and camera work are done by the same engineer on the same visit, so on arrival they locate the access point, clear what is reachable, rod or jet the run, test the flow end to end, clear up, and explain what caused it.
Drain Repairs, Relining and Excavation
Where a survey finds a cracked pipe, a displaced joint or root ingress, we carry out thedrainage repair. Pipe relining cures a resin liner in place inside the existing pipe, no dig, no destroyed driveway, usually done in a day. Root cutting removes ingress at source. Excavation is a last resort, used only where the pipe is beyond relining, and we will tell you honestly which your drain needs.
How Much Does Drain Unblocking Cost in Manchester
There is no call-out charge. You pay nothing for us to attend and assess.
We agree a fixed fee over the phone before an engineer is dispatched, and you are not committed until you agree it. There is no out-of-hours surcharge: the same fixed fee applies at night, at weekends and on bank holidays.
What affects the price is the type of blockage, whether it clears with rodding or needs jetting, how accessible the drain is, and whether a CCTV survey is needed to diagnose a structural fault. A simple internal blockage costs less than a deep external run.
What we do not do is quote low on the phone and inflate it once the engineer is at your door. The fixed fee is agreed before the job starts, or the job does not start.
Your Drain, United Utilities' Sewer, or the Council's
If the drain serves only your property and sits within your boundary, it is your responsibility. That includes the pipework inside the house, and gullies within the grounds of the property.
Everything beyond your boundary is United Utilities'. That includes the lateral drain running from your boundary to the public sewer, the public sewers themselves, and shared sewers where several neighbouring properties' drains meet before joining the public sewer. If your neighbours are affected by the same blockage, the problem is almost certainly in a shared sewer, and United Utilities will clear it at no cost to you.
Road gullies, grids and manhole covers in the highway are Manchester City Council's responsibility, and should be reported to them.
Not sure which side your blockage sits on? We can investigate with a CCTV camera and tell you exactly where it is and who is responsible before you spend anything on a repair. If it turns out to be United Utilities', we will tell you, and you should call them rather than pay us.
Should You Try to Clear It Yourself
A plunger is worth a try on a simple sink or toilet blockage. Chemical drain cleaners can shift a soft blockage but damage older clay and cast-iron pipework with repeated use, and are hazardous sitting in a fully blocked pipe. No drain unblocker sold in Manchester will fix a collapsed pipe or a root through a joint.
Call us when the drain is fully blocked, water backs up indoors, more than one fixture is affected, sewage smells come from inside, or the same drain has blocked more than twice.

How much does it cost to unblock a drain in Manchester?
We agree a fixed fee over the phone before any engineer attends. No call-out charge, no out-of-hours surcharge. A simple rodding job costs less than a deep external jetting job, and you always know the price before we start.
Who is responsible, me, United Utilities, or the council?
If the drain serves only your property and sits within your boundary, it is your responsibility. Everything beyond your boundary is United Utilities': the lateral drain, shared sewers where several neighbouring properties' drains meet before joining the public sewer, and the public sewers themselves. If your neighbours are also affected, the problem is almost certainly in a shared sewer and United Utilities will clear it for free. Road gullies and highway drains are Manchester City Council's responsibility. We can confirm which side the blockage sits on with a CCTV camera before you spend anything.
Is there a call-out charge?
No. The site assessment is free. You pay only for work agreed in advance.
Can you come out at night or at weekends?
Yes. A genuine 24/7 service across Manchester at the same fixed fee, with no premium rate.
Why does my drain keep blocking in the same place?
Almost always structural: root ingress, a collapsed pipe or a displaced joint. A CCTV survey finds it so we repair it properly instead of clearing it again every few weeks.
Do you offer a guarantee?
Yes. If the same blockage returns within the guarantee period, we return at no extra charge.
